KING OF THE BEACH 2022 | Mackay| With Royal Enfield

King of the beach! This is a wild event that I didn’t know existed until I got a call from josh about a week before saying “we're going on a road trip to Mackay for some beach race.” For me, I love a road trip so I jumped on no hesitation, I mean who else wouldn’t want to drive 10 hours north for 2 nights and drive 10 hours back?

King of the beach is Australia’s only beach race held up just south of Mackay. In our heads, we thought it would be similar to dust hustle, with lots of people heading up for a fun weekend having a laugh on the beach, we didn’t know how wrong this would be. With the race running for nearly 100 years, it’s become quite the big tradition in those parts, no prize money just lots of bragging rights at the pub for the next 12 months. The guys who entered the road bike category would take 1200 dukes, fit them out with KTM parts, extend the swing arms out and run them on methanol. Some of the riders were clocking 250km/h on the straight. The boys (Josh and Vinny) had no idea what they were in for, riding stock Royal Enfield 650s with a bit of suspension work and custom exhausts they were both riding the limiter on the interceptor and continental down the straights yet looking like they were standing still as the other bikes flew past them. The best bit was because we were the only real road bikes out on the sand that day, the Royal Enfield tent got a lot of attention. All day we had people coming up to see us and give compliments on the bikes.

For the event, I made a video and also put together some photos for the team at Royal Enfield Australia, doing both videography and photography at events like this can be very challenging as there is a lot of space to cover and you don’t get lots of time to do it. Luckily I brought along the drone to get some cool shots.
