Behind the Camera: Filming the Story of 2 Face for Shannons Insurance

Introduction

In this article, I will share my unique experience of working on a fascinating project for Shannons Insurance. As a content creator and filmmaker, I had the opportunity to collaborate with my friend, Jake Ashe, who owns the Lucky Boy agency. Together, we embarked on a two-day journey to capture the essence of Geoff Luck's extraordinary restoration project, known as "2 Face." This remarkable endeavour involved filming captivating scenes that showcased the transformation of a Holden HZ Sandman look-a-like ute with two distinct sides; one side was impeccably restored, while the other remained rustic with years of road grime and dirt. Our goal was to create a compelling video for Shannons' original series, DRIVEN, which highlights the stories of motoring enthusiasts and their automotive passions.

1. Inception of the Project

The idea for "2 Face" originated from Geoff Luck's desire to create something truly unique and multifunctional. He envisioned a runabout truck for his panel shop, GC Restoration, while simultaneously using it as a captivating calling card for his business. This ambitious restoration project aimed to blend the old and new, showcasing the beauty of both worlds.

2. The Vision Takes Shape

When we began the project, we met with Geoff Luck to understand his vision fully. His passion and enthusiasm for the project were contagious, and it fueled our excitement to get started. Jake Ashe and I spent considerable time meticulously planning the shots and sequences to effectively narrate the story of "2 Face."

3. Day 1: Capturing the Dynamic Shots

On the first day of filming, we utilized a variety of techniques to capture the dynamic shots that would bring "2 Face" to life on screen. We used tracking shots from other vehicles to showcase the vehicle's movement and grace on the road. Additionally, drone shots allowed us to capture stunning aerial views of the contrasting sides of the ute, highlighting its unique design. For static shots, we used locked-off tripods to ensure a steady and focused view of specific scenes.

4. Day 2: Interviews and Workshop B-Roll

On the second day, we conducted interviews with Geoff Luck, delving into the motivation behind the project and the challenges he encountered during the restoration. The workshop b-roll added authenticity to the video, showcasing the dedication and craftsmanship that went into "2 Face."

Conclusion

Working on the "2 Face" project for Shannon's Insurance was an extraordinary experience for me. Collaborating with Jake Ashe and witnessing Geoff Luck's passion for automotive restoration left an indelible mark on my filmmaking journey. It's these unique stories that drive motoring enthusiasts and ignite the spark of creativity within all of us.
