Shannons Driven Episode 29 BTS

I was lucky enough to work with two good friends of mine on a commercial project for Shannons Insurance. This is part of a series they have on youtube called driven, featuring unique stories of motoring enthusiasts, told in their own words. The series delves into the origins of their passion and what drives them.

Jake Ashe would be the man behind the story on the main camera and I was assisting with 2nd camera duties. This episode itself features our good mate Tom Gilroy who runs Purpose built moto. Someone who is quite a well know bike builder within Australia and the world. The three of us have become quite good mates over the last little while so being able to team up and create together is a dream come true.

Tom and I work together all the time, since the start of 2020 I have been shooting the majority of his content and it has been a great opportunity for me to grow my skills and develop as a photographer/filmmaker.

Day one began at the PBM workshop getting the interview, some establishing shots and Tom gearing up for the other scenes. The director was going to come up from Melbourne but due to covid restrictions, he had to conduct the interview over zoom. From then on we were on our own, which can be a bit daunting on a commercial project but having the man Jake running the show we knew everything would be running smooth.

Once we had finished getting what was needed in the workshop we went inland into the Tweed Valley. The rest of the afternoon was going to be filled with riding around the cane fields, setting up camp, enjoy a fire and a beer on the banks of the river.

The camp spot was great, positioned on the side of a cane field, right on the river in the valley only 15minutes from home. It was all going pretty well, until about 8 pm, then it all changed. The wind picked up, the clouds covered the sky and it started raining, raining hard. Halfway through cooking dinner too (sausages and bread). At one point I looked around, as we stood under the gazebo, saturated, trying to cook our food on the fire and everyone had a grin ear to ear. The weather couldn’t bring down how pumped we all were to be on this trip together. The rain cleared after about an hour, we had food in our bellies and plenty of cold beers to keep us busy as we dried off by the fire.

Day two began before the sun got up, around mountain roads and through some big open fields as the sun came above the mountains of the valley, I got the drone out and got some really cool shots of Tom riding through the farm roads right on a golden hour. The whole project was super fun, Jake has done such an amazing job on the edit have a look at the video below and give it a watch.
